5 Ways Drones Are Revolutionizing The World

5 Ways Drones Are Revolutionizing The World

There has been an explosion in the use of drones over the past 12 months. There are close to 8,000 registered drone owners in the U.S., and the number is increasing by the day. Many predict this is only the start, and that unmanned aircraft will become part of everyday life over the next decade.

Drones are now commonly used for aerial photography and surveying, and their potential is being recognized in a broad range of industries. Bodies like the Federal Aviation Authority (FAA) are keeping a close eye on developments. There are obvious risks in flying unmanned aircraft in the crowded skies, but there are great benefits if these can be managed.

The following are five ways drones are expected to revolutionize the world.

1. Emergency services

Firefighters and search and rescue teams are already using unmanned aircraft for training and emergencies. As well as taking high definition photographs, advanced aircraft can stream live video footage. Infrared cameras allow emergency services personnel to search for missing people in remote locations. Drones are able to operate in dense smoke and other environments where firefighters would be in danger.

2. Security and protection

Human rights campaigners have expressed concerns about drones being used for surveillance, but they can play a valuable role in security and protection. Concert and sport event organizers are using unmanned aircraft to monitor and ensure safe movement of crowds. Fixed CCTV cameras still have a role to play, but an aerial perspective allows gatherings of people to be tracked more effectively.

Home patrol drones are now available to spot intruders and send live footage following a break-in. Combined with sensors and smart lights, these miniature aircraft can monitor suspicious activity and catch criminals in the act.

3. Delivery services

Amazon, UPS and Google are just some of the companies developing delivery services using unmanned aircraft. The goal is to offer faster deliveries at lower costs, and significant progress is being made. Safety concerns are being addressed by installing advanced artificial intelligence software. Geofencing software can be used to define virtual boundaries in which delivery drones can fly, meaning they will not operate close to airports and other hazardous locations.

4. Agriculture

Climate change and population growth has led to serious concerns about food supplies in years to come. Mankind faces a growing demand for food, and output must be increased. Unmanned aircraft have many applications in the field of agriculture, and they can improve efficiency and reduce costs. Drones can be used to check large areas of crops very quickly. Infrared cameras can identify sick plants and other problems before they ruin an entire crop. Infestations of mites and other pests can be spotted by drones, and there are prototype models capable of spraying pesticides.

5. Environmental conservation

It's generally recognized that greater care must be taken of the planet for future generations. Environmental protection schemes are generally underfunded and understaffed, and this is another area where drones can make a positive impact. The ability to reach remote places and capture data means unmanned aircraft can help to tackle environmental issues before they arise. They are playing practical roles in monitoring weather patterns and the impact of industrialization. Unmanned aircraft are also helping to fight forest fires and track the movement of endangered species.

It's hard to predict how unmanned aircraft will be used in the future, but they will have a positive impact in many areas of everyday life. Combined with advances in artificial intelligence, drones will become even more sophisticated over the next few years.
